Many Dr. Seuss books are being recalled!.
Books published between 1937 and 1976 contained stereotypes that were clearly racist.
On top of that, PePe Le Pew, the famous Warner Bros. skunk has also been canceled.
Evidently, PePe Le Pew normalized rape culture!
What are your thoughts about CENSORSHIP (prohibiting books, movies, etc.) because they are obscene, unacceptable and a threat to society?
Are we too sensitive as a society?
Explain.

It kinda disappointing to me that such an innocent children's book is actually promoting racism. I grew up a lot on Dr. Seuss books and I loved them but it's true it is out dated and Racism is taught at a young age and this is just creating more potential Racists. Also having authors publish books on rape culture is actually super disturbing, how have they not checked multiple times before being published to a kids community or in the general public. I don't think society is being to sensitive to the books, it's creating kids at younger ages to learn on rape culture and racism. And if it's coming from a kids book how are they supposed to use their judgement when they are just kids who don't fully comprehend the idea of racism and rape culture. All though I grew up on the books it really depends how the parent handles the situation, either they promote it or they teach their kids right from wrong. Either way the books should be discontinued.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I use to read Dr. Seuss all the time as kid but never realized the problem at such a young age. Great blog!
DeleteI agree it's very disappointing! Great blog!
DeleteYou are right it does also depend on how the teachers handle the situation. They should be discontinued.
DeleteI definitely think it’s good that they are acknowledging the unacceptable things that are said and demonstrated in books in movies that are possibly offensive, threatening, etc. Although something I don’t particularly understand is why we didn’t take action sooner? Throughout the years people have become more aware of racism and rape culture so I just assumed we would have tackled this problem sooner. Maybe since Dr. Seuss and Warner Bros are older books and movies, people forgot about them or evidently chose to ignore the problem because of their love for these things. I don’t think we’re too sensitive as a society but I do believe some people can be hypocritical. Like I said before it’s possible people chose to turn a blind eye earlier on with Dr. Seuss and Warner Bros because of their love for these things but thought it was ok to maybe cancel other authors and film companies. Which is good we need to REMOVE racism and normalizing rape culture but if we’re going to do that then it has to be everything associated with those things which means we can’t pick and choose.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that we do need to remove racism from media. Great blog!

DeleteI as well do believe some people in our society can be hypocritical. Great job on your blog!
DeleteI think it's sad that Dr. Suess was teaching young kids racism because racism is tought, you're not born with it. When I was younger I used to read some Dr. Suess books. But PePe Le Pew was one of my childhood shows I grew up with so it's sad to think that it was enforcing not consenual actions and teaching young kids that it's ok to harrass people. I think that in some cases yes people can be too sensitive but in this case, teaching young kids bad things (racisme, rape, homophobia, etc) is not something we want.
ReplyDeleteI understand your points, It's so disappointing as we got older to realise the full concept, great blog very well explained
DeletePePe Le Pew was one of my favourite shows while i was growing up too, great blog
DeleteI agree, we shouldn't be teaching this to kids! Great blog.
DeleteOk so I do believe that there is a strong case for Dr Seuss publishing racist content. But when it comes to PePe Le Pew, I kind of disagree with the notion that PePe Le Pew was normalizing rape culture for children. To be honest he seems more like a silly cartoon character more than anything. I feel that censorship can be useful when it comes to prohibiting harmful content, but I honestly feel that these days there is just a little bit too much censorship in media these days.
ReplyDeleteI think that normalizing rape culture for children is bad too. Good blog!
DeleteExactly! Poor Pepe didn't do anything to deserve this. He's just an everyday cartoon.
DeleteI completely agree that there is getting to be too much censorship. Good blog!

ReplyDeleteI’m upset that the Dr. Seuss books are being recalled because they’re part of my childhood, but I understand why. Some of the messages in the books are inappropriate and unacceptable in today's society. My thoughts about censorship are simple, they are obscene, unacceptable and a threat to society. Times change and bad things are happening and sometimes the books can influence our thoughts and points of view in a negative way. I don't think we are too sensitive as a society just precautious of our surroundings.
ReplyDeleteI agree Dr. Seuss books were a big pat of my childhood but yes some had very bad messages in them. Great blog!
DeleteI think to some point we are getting too sensitive as a society, recently i think some people have been taking a lot of things to offence easily. It's really sad about the doctor Seuss books. i think some books are clearly offending and a directing a certain group of people and they should be discontinued because its disrespectful and it shouldn't be promoted. But I don't think some of the books will really affect little kids though because they're still young and wouldn't really realize whatever is being said they mostly just get fun out of the books for the rhyming and cool illustrations. e.t.c Either way i do think certain books should be discontinued because its very wrong to support subjects like that in anyway.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, certain books should be discontinued. Great blog!
DeleteIn my opinion, in the case of Pepe Le Pew, I'm not sure that this cartoon is still being shown on TV because I know they are quite old. I think it's showing the young audience, especially boys the wrong message. To be forceful and aggressive towards girls. As well as the girls, if you think about it. It may be showing them to be passive and that it's okay if boys treat you that way.
ReplyDeleteThings like that, I agree should not be shown and should be censored. Things that might be racist or putting down another person, gender, religion or sexual orientation should still be available but should have a warning sensor symbol. On movies, books and even on radio stations and music. For example, a label or special sticker with a certain logo on the cover of a book or CD.
But other things I think that the public should be able to and have the right to decide what's right for them and what's not.
I get the Dr Seuss books. You shouldn't show your kids those types of stereotypes. They were seen as okay back then, but they are not now. They had many mockeries of Asian and black people, and it's only right to get rid of them. Pepe Le Pew is a whole other thing. I grew up watching Looney Tunes, so I may be biased but really? Promoting rape culture? The most I've seen this guy do is kiss the cat, not to mention HE IS A LITERAL ANIMAL. The joke is that he thinks the cat is a skunk and wants to be with her. He kisses her sure, but does he ever do anything overly inappropriate that will make some buffoon go "HEY WHY DON'T I GO VIOLATE A WOMAN"? No.
ReplyDeleteMy question is who is Pepe Le Pew? My thoughts on censorship is that i don't know I really don't know what to say except one thing, people normalize a lot of things and that's either okay or not okay. They could be triggering for some and people can get upset by different things, an example could be the thought of dying alone (it’s the only thing I can think of that isn’t censored) Some people can find that really triggering and some don’t. People always forget about what other people are comfortable with after all, we make ourselves comfortable and not others. Honestly society is sensitive and that’s okay after we all have something we’re scared of :)
ReplyDeleteIt's really upsetting how these stories and characters that so many grew up loving are inappropriate. Even though it's disappointing I understand why this is happening and agree with it. The stereotypes they used in the stories are very racist. I think that they shouldn't get rid of the stories completely but definitely not show them to children and put a warning on the first page that explains what they said was completely wrong and racist and that we should use the stories as a way to learn and to create a more accepting and less stereotypical future.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a bit sad to have all these childhood memories taken away. I mean, it's bad and not good, but at that time, it was okay. It wasn't such a big deal back then. The times have changed. Racism is a HUGE thing. I think we should keep these books, but have something in the book to let the reader know that these stereotypes are fake and you should not be racist. Plus, if they do this, it will be something that the readers can learn. It will be educational.
ReplyDeleteYou're by keeping these racist books from Doctor Seuss it is teaching children that this is the wrong way of living or treating the common man and it could chow what it was like back then.
DeleteI think that it's a good idea that they are taking away the books of Dr.Seus that talk about bad things but at the same time I think that it's still a childhood memory. Maybe a remaster of some sorts would be good, one that would keep the old characters but possibly remove the outdated content, same thing with Pepe. Censorship these days can be a little more strict which is for the good because in this case it's because we don't wanna teach children those things.
ReplyDeleteYeah a remaster of the books would be good.

ReplyDeleteI think censorship is very important because if some shows or books promote very horrible behavior towards a certain group of people they should be well, censored. I know that the “PePe Le Pew” skunk has been canceled because there has been a show of rape culture demonstrated. I myself have never really watched Looney Tunes but I’m positive that “PePe Le Pew'' wasn't that bad. If people think that it should be taken down then I can do nothing about it but I know that people who have watched Looney Tunes their entire childhood are very disappointed because something they liked has now been prohibited from ever being watched again. I don’t think we are too sensitive as a society but I think we should pay more attention to how others will react before we do something. I loved reading Dr. Seuss books as a kid and I never once found anything inappropriate about them. I’m sure now that if I reread some Dr. Seuss books I could find a few things that are wrong about them but since the books are meant for kids they will not even realize that something is hurtful or discriminative.
ReplyDeleteIt's really sad that Dr. Seuss books have racial stereotypes. Those books were a big part of my childhood so it's sad to see. Throughout the years people have been realising more problems with certain brands. shows etc. the have realised there was a problem with Pepe le pew because in the show the he doesn't stop bugging the cat even though she said to stop. Kids can watch this and get the wrong impression. I think they should still keep these things but take out the racist and wrong things in them
ReplyDeleteOkay it's great that they are canceling these Dr.Seuss books that are racist and also these PePe Le Pew cartoons which condol rape but we shouldn't shun these people that made it because at the time they made it it wasn't seen as a bad thing but I'm sure if they were at the times of are society they would still be talented but there content would be adjusted for the satufaction of are society. Are society is definitely better than before but some times were too sensitive like taking down statues from the 1800's because they were great leaders but had something bad about them like being alcoholics which was perfectly fine at the time.
ReplyDeleteI think that books, TV shows and movies with racist or sexist stereotypes should be taken down especially children's media because you don't want little kids growing up thinking that everything people thought back then is right. Censorship is important to make sure that only the right information is published.
ReplyDeleteI agree if kids grow up with that stuff they might think that it is ok
DeleteI think as a whole, our society is very hard to interact with, any slight stutter in a sentence can get you yelled at, sued, cancelled, etc. But I do beleive that we should still be keeping things safe for others, like we should still call people out for homophobia, racism or sexism but, if someone slips up, they should be able to catch or clarify what they ment before a crowd of angry people yells at them. In terms of the book and cartoon things, I think that they should be censored because we don't want our children growing up with racism on their mind, but come on, are we really going to get riled up and pist off about a dead guy and yelling at him, who is dead, instead of just censoring it or getting rid of the books that were offensive.
ReplyDeleteI think that censorship is important because no one likes to feel uncomfortable and everyone should feel comfortable reading their kids books and watching cartoons without feeling threatened. I think that it is good that our society is sensitive because not all people can be trusted to make sure that their kids know that it is wrong to do bad things even if they do them in cartoons.
ReplyDeleteOur society is WAY to sensitive. I agree that obviously some of the books that Dr. Seuss made we're racist, and should be taken away from kids. I don't agree, however, for them destroying the books. It shows how prominently racism was in the day, and that it was even in children's books. I think that they should be kept away from kids, at least the racist ones. The other ones that I grew up with are fine, cause I don't remember seeing anything like that. I think the Pepe Le Pew is taking it a little bit far though. It was just a cartoon character, and I can't really remember seeing him force or harass any female characters from what I can remember. I might be wrong though. Like I said earlier, I think that society is getting a little bit to sensitive. People will come after you and possibly destroy your career and life for one tweet or Instagram post you made 5 years ago and apologized for already. I do agree with some people getting canceled, but I think that sometimes the internet can take it too far. On the topic of censorship, I think that it should be up to people to be able to consume whatever media they want to, as long as they put a sensitivity warning on it, like those posts on Instagram, and giving governments and companies the ability to decide what material we consume and don't consume is a step in the direction of loosing the rights, and taking away the idea that the internet is for all information, not just what the government said is ok.
ReplyDeleteI agree, maybe society is getting a bit too sensitive, great blog!
DeleteI think that it's good that those Dr.Seuss books are being taken down. And especially that Pew Pew Le Pew is being cancelled. These are books and a show that are meant to be for kids and no one said that anything was wrong until now. I think, especially when it comes to cases like this, there should be censorship. Maybe society is a little sensitive, but we know what is appropriate and inappropriate.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I've never heard of Pepe Le Pew But I do think it's pretty disturbing that there are books and other thing promoting racism and so much more that we really should not be teaching two young kids or anyone for that matter. I think it is right that there” cancelling” most of these things but to a certain extent I believe we are getting a little bit too sensitive like for example the mr. Potato Head .
