In Quebec City, there was a fatal stabbing on Halloween night.

Some people take SCARY MOVIES too far.

Do you enjoy SCARY MOVIES?
What is your favourite SCARY MOVIE?

Some people feel that SCARY MOVIES cause viewers to think and act in unhealthy, morbid ways.

Do you agree/disagree?

Explain.

  1. In my opinion yes, scary movies can influence someone but very little by maybe making nightmares or making them cautious when they walk into a dark room, little things like that but its up to the person to make the decision for themselves. They cant go around killing everyone like in the movies they need to understand the diffrence between movies and real life. Once serious actions occur it becomes real life the movies shouldnt have that big of an influence on someone. Once that person comits the crime movies have nothing to do with it its an official problem with the person themselves and should probablh seek help.

    1. I agree when you said movies shouldn't have an influence on people's real life decisions especially ones that involve killing. Great blog! :)

    2. I agree scary movies can have tiny influences like bad dreams.

    3. I agree with you about making people cautious when they walk into a dark room.

  2. I like scary movies, but not if they're too scary. I like being scared when I know it's all fake. I haven't watched a lot of scary movies recently, but a good one is The Exorcist, the 1973 one, it was pretty scary for me. I don't think the majority of people start acting in unhealthy ways after a scary movie, at least I've never heard of it. Most people I think would just shake it off. So I guess I would have to disagree with that statement. Maybe if it was a little kid watching a scary movie for the first time and they got scared, but I don't think they would act in unhealthy or morbid ways for too much longer after watching it. But I also don't think a lot of people would let their younger children watch a scary movie until they are old enough to understand that it's all fake.

  3. I think that scary movies can inspire a little bit of fear. But for most people "I think" it wont really affect a motive to hurt people. I haven' watched lots of horror movies actually only recently I started and wow it can be crazy the things that they can make your mind believe. My favorite scary movie is IT , I find it good because its a good mix of jump scares and overall scariness. Another example can be truth or dare. The movie doesn't necessarily have jump scares but its overall "creepy atmosphere" makes you rethink a lot of things. Comparing it to a horror movie that's just full of jump scares which might make you make sure your closet is closed that night but nothing else. I am not really linking this to scary movies because I don't really know but I know normal movies sometimes people think "since they did it in the movie I am sure I can pull it off in real life". I comprehend that movies are made to entertain but it kind of sucks that it can sometimes inspire people to do what they do in movies. Thinking there will be no consequence.

  4. Even though scary movies are usually gruesome and well... scary, I don't think it makes people more violent, maybe a little, but not enough to stab someone to death. I personally hate scary movies since I can't handle anything that can be remotely scary, like jumpscares make me just leave the room, contemplate my life decisions, then return with a fear for whatever it was that would last me a week.

  5. I love scary movies! My favourite movie is IT but I don’t find it that scary to me it's more of a comedy. I probably shouldn’t say that because then people might think I’m psychotic but I’m sure other people agree with me :) I think that whether or not the movie influences people's decisions depends on the person. Some people with mental illness may have a higher chance of taking the movie too seriously and made it influence their ideas and actions.

  6. Horror movies are for sure my favourite genre of movies. I think my favourite scary movie is Pet Semetary or Halloween. I do think that scary movies can cause insperation for people to do bad things and that's why I think most of the movies are rated R for that reason.

  7. For me, horror movies are a yes/no situation. If theres an excessive amount of jump scares and no story, then I won't want to watch it. If its more psychological horror, than I'll probably love it. I love when movies mess with your mind, like The Shining. It's not a terrifying movie, but it definitely messes with your mind a bit. I do not think horror movies can drive someone to kill unless 1. They are in a horror movie themselves, or 2. theyre some sort of super fan.

  8. I don't really like scary movies nor do I have a favourite. I don't think that scary movies should really have an impact on someone to act unhealthy or morbid. Some people could be terrified.I think it would only make people act unhealthy or morbid if they have a psychological disorder. If you know that horror movies can change your state of mind then don't watch them.

    2. Exactly and if you feel as if a movie has caused you to have unwanted thoughts or other similar behaviour then don't be scared to ask for help. Great blog!

  9. I, LOVE horror movies. I don't really have a favourite movie in perticular, but my favourite series is Saw. It is really gruesome and I like how it does add some ethics to it. (I.E. would I save the person who killed my family) I think that while horror movies can scare people and put them on edge for a couple of, at most, days, I think that most people are put on edge for a couple of hours at most then everything goes back to normal and you can move on. The only time I can see that a horror movie can cause someone to hurt someone else is if there is a movie like The Invisible Man, where the main character tries to convince everyone that there is her invisible husband trying to destroy her life, and everyone thinks shes crazy. If someone who is not mentally stable were to watch that movie, I think that they might take it as a sign that everyone is out to get them and that they have to hurt other people to save themselves. Otherwise, I think that people can watch whatever movies they want without being affected too much.

  10. I personally LOVE scary movies mainly because sometimes if you’re with friends, scary movies make the night so fun because you scream together, you can hug each other in complete terror if you’re really scared of scary movies, etc. I don’t really know which scary movie is my favorite mainly because I haven’t watched one in a while because my parents and my sister don’t like them so I’d have nobody to watch it with. I definitely think that with some people, scary movies can cause them to think that it’s okay to do what they see in a movie, but it’s definitely not.

  11. I think out of scary movies, can make people have an interest in these sorts of things. Especially now with all these horror movies, people keep coming up with new stories and ideas to scare people. But it’s so strange and crazy at the same time, they can make us believe in this reality of horror and make us think and sometimes, even do crazy things. But I’m not speaking for everyone because some people enjoy horror/scary movies, but I’m definitely not one of them, I’m the kind of person who is terrified of horror movies, it doesn’t matter even if it’s a children's one. But I partially agree and disagree at the same time about how people can do this. But people’s actions always come with consequences. But that is just really wrong. You need to make a better/wiser choice and make the right decision.

  12. I am absolutely terrified of scary movies, I get scared very easily. Since I don't watch scary movies I do not have a favourite scary movie. If I do end up watching a scary movie I just close my eyes the entire time. If you're somebody that is not in tune with reality, this could seriously affect you and you might think that some of that stuff is real. It could desensitize and make them think that killing or doing bad things are okay.

    1. I also don't like scary movies but for a different reason. For me I close my eyes if the movie gets really gory or if someone is ripping off someone's limbs.

  13. I don't mind scary movies. My favorite scary movie is IT. I found it was very interesting and suspenseful. I think that people who think and act in unhealthy ways should control them selves and not watch scary movies. I think viewers should read reviews or watch the trailer to a movie before watching.

  14. Scary movies definitely aren’t my favourite type of genre. I do although like comedy/scary movies because they usually aren’t scary at all but hilarious. Like I said I don’t particualy enjoy scary movies so I don’t really have a favourite. I do think scary movies can have a bad influence on certain viewers. Everyone has a different tolerance of fear so some may have nightmares from a certain movie and others may not be affected at all. Some people even become killers or psychopaths from watching scary movies because it influenced their brain in the worst way possible. But that’s not always the case.

  15. Personally I don't really like scary movies. I think when I was younger I watched a scary movie and that movie has made me not want to watch a scary movie ever again. I also don't like the feeling of being sacred and always try to get away from scary movies. I don't believe that scary movies could cause you to do any of the same harm that they do in the movie, it's like saying that anything with violence could cause you to be violent and that's never the reason it's always something that's mental.

  16. I enjoy watching scary movies with my friends like at a sleepover, but I could not watch a scary movie alone to save my life because it’s not my favorite genre and I need to have comfort. I don’t necessarily have a favorite scary movie because I haven’t watched many scary movies lately. I agree that scary movies cause viewers to think and act in unhealthy, morbid ways because it has actually happened to me. You can start to think and imagine scary thoughts that can cause anxiety and panic attacks.

  17. I haven’t watched that many scary movies but I think I should start because they seem really fun. My favourite scary movie is Krampus because it's one of the only scary movies I've seen and I like how it was based on a legend from Germany. I think that it depends on the person who is watching the movie to think of doing bad things because some people are responsible and know that they can’t do whatever they want in the real world. I don't think that Horror movies necessarily promote violence and bad behavior, I just think that some people are not kind or could have some mental disability that makes them unstable or unable to understand that there are rules in the real world and if you break them there are consequences.

  18. No i personally don't enjoy scary movies .My favourite scary movie is halloween.I like this movie because its really funny and there were a lot of jump scares. Its also based around my favourite holiday\time of year.I agree to a certain extent that these type of things can cause viewers to act in morbid ways but i don't have a strong belief in that.

  19. I’m not really a fan of scary movies but from time to time it’s fun to watch them. My favourite scary movie has got to be IT. The movie is cool because it shows how far kids will go to save the people that they love. As well the story is a great adventure and I can’t wait until I watch the second one when I have time. I completely agree that some scary movies can make people think that it’s okay to act a certain way when they absolutely shouldn't. I think that the people who do act out after watching a scary movie are those that have had something bad happen to them. For instance the man that stabbed the people in Quebec City had mental disabilities and needed some kind of help. The news has mentioned that in his house there were signs that he was asking for help but nobody was answering. So I think that the man acted the way he did to get attention to himself so that he could then receive the help that he desperately needed and wanted.

  20. Well, kinda... I hate watching scary movies alone but i would love to watch it with my friends! I watched IT at my friend's sleepover and it was a pretty good movie. The jump scares were quite the shock for me but i just get scared really easily. I also really love the 3 Annabelle movies. My favourite was Annabelle Comes Home, just because the movie gave me a good scare but i stilled have fun watching it with my best friend. Scary Movies "could" sometimes cause viewers to think and act in weird ways but I hope they don't hurt anyone.

  21. I personally am not a huge fan of scary movies although if one is on I will still watch it would not be my first choice. I think that yes scary/violent movies can have an impact on people's actions because it can give people ideas after all movies are not most of the time none realistic meaning the stuff they do are very extreme and not meant to replicate
