Our Lives Matter

Through the course of a historic year of civil unrest and the emergence of the #BlackLivesMatter Movement, teen writers from around the globe came together to take part in this national conversation about race, inequality, violence, and justice.

"We are not thugs, they say. We are not victims. We are big sisters and sports stars, academic strivers and everyday heroes. We speak out for justice. We dream big dreams." These writers want more for themselves, more for their community, more for their generation.

Who are the people you look up to and learn from right now? Who do you follow on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok? Are they white? Or are they people of color, from all kinds of backgrounds? How can we spread the word about OUR LIVES MATTER?

Explain.

  1. Now I learn a lot from teachers a school, my parents, youtube videos and more. I usually follow or subscribe to people who make funny content or and talk about video games im interested about. And a bunch more. And most of the time it is different cultures and races. We can probably use them in our posts as a hashtag because those are usually a great way to spread awareness. Plus hash-tags are clickable so you can see more content like that and learn from it.

  2. I don’t look up to anyone specifically, mainly people who have a good sense who they are or who they want to be. I also look up to people who understand the importance of equality and everything related to it. I follow artist, photographers, writers and many talented people on TikTok and Instagram. My current favourites influencers right now are @the.extra.girl, @heyimboredwhatsup and @its.tmariee. They are influences trying to help others find confidence in themselves or just overall funny and relatable people. I follow people because of their content and not because of their background. It shouldn’t matter what religion they follow or what colour their skin is.
We can continue to spread awareness by using our social platforms to boost movements and address the problems.

    1. I completely agree you should be friends and/or follow someone because of the type of person they are and not because of their race, culture e.t.c.

  3. The people I look up to are mostly my older cousins or maybe my parents. I just want to be my own person and I don't want to be following other people for their fame. The poeple I follow on Instagram are my friends and family, some famous people that have ineresting content, like things I am into, like dogs or outfits, shoes, etc. The people I follow on Tiktok are usually, again friends, also people who post funny videos or, again, things I am interested in. I don't have Twitter and you don't follow people on Snap. Use Snap to text and snap friends and family but that is pretty much it. I do not look at peoples colour when I follow them, usually I don't even notice, everybody is the same to me.

    1. I also just want to be my own person and I don't want to be following other people for their fame because it doesn't really matter. Great job on your blog!

  4. I don’t really look up to anyone specifically. I kind of just admire people on social media. I follow many famous people and my friends on my social apps. I don’t really pay attention to things like races and skin colors on social media. I usually just follow the people I’m more interested in and when following someone I like to check out if they’re sketchy or not. I think we can spread the word about OUR LIVES MATTER by using hashtags. They are very efficient and can easily spread awareness.

  5. I look up to a few artists, musicians and people, and the group is pretty diverse. I follow them on Instagram, and I normally am excited when any of them post. I don't pay attention to what race they are, but now that I think of it, most of the people I look up to are all in different groups when it comes to race. The only thing I check for when I am about to follow someone, is to see if they're an ultimately bad person, in that case I will not follow them.

  6. I look up to my oldest brother a lot but I also look up to some actors or actresses regarding this topic. Some actresses and actors that i've seen in particular are spreading news the right way and not being disrespectful to different communities. For example I really respect Zendaya because you can see how she truly wants to help and shes ready to fight for what she wants. My following is just who ever's content is interesting to me it doesn't matter if you're African, Asian, European and it doesn't matter if you are apart of the LGBTQ+ community because were all the same. So my following is diverse between a bunch of cultures, religions, gender, colours. Using hashtags to spread awareness can go a far way also participating in educating people and telling stories about different historic or current hero's.

  7. Right now, I am in love with WWE and I look up to one of the superstars specifically. I look up to Sasha Banks because she truly is one of the best in the business and I just want to be like her when I grow up! I follow a lot of different people on Instagram. For example, kids at our school, kids at other schools, celebrities, etc. They’re not all white, they are a variety of different ethnicities, races, etc.

  8. I don't really don't look up to anyone. I really just hear stuff on social media or on the news and research and try to make my own opinion on that topic. One of the best ways to get news and opinions around is by using hashtags. It's especially useful when you are looking for news on a certain topic or something like that. Another great way is to talk to people. Either in real life or online, because they might be able to either tell you more about the subject and make you change the way you see the topic, or they could reinforce what you think on that topic with more facts and evidence.

  9. I learn from my family, my friends my teachers. I do learn things on social media too. The person I look up to the most is my mom. If people wanted to spread the message about all lives matter I would say the best place to tell people is on social media. A lot of people are on it and that is also how most people share information. Like others have said using hashtags can really help because you're most likely to come across things with them in it.

  10. The person that I most look up to right now is my mom. She's doing her best during the pandemic, working her full time job in the medical field and still coming home to do more work, spend time with me, the dogs and my grandma. It's a lot, but she's making it work like she always does. Right now I follow mostly friends and family on Instagram and on tiktok again mostly friends, but I do follow some of like the more famous people, who do come from all different backgrounds. The best way to spread Our Lives Matter is using the internet/social media.

  11. The person I look up to the most is my mom. She is the most caring and kind person on the planet. She is constantly taking care of other people and always looking out for others. She is also the strongest person I have ever met, she went through some really tough things growing up and she still never complains and will do anything for anyone. I don’t have social media so i don’t follow anyone but if I did they’re race, religion or background wouldn’t matter. As long as they are kind, caring people who want to bring others happiness that’s all that matters to me.

  12. I learn a lot from my parents, teachers and different online things. I usually follow my friends and people who post content that interest me or is funny. Are choose to follow people based if I like there content not there cultures and race. I think OUR LIVES MATTER can be spread through social media as a hashtag or it can be in the news.

  13. Teachers, my mom and people on the internet are basically all the people I looke up to and learn from. Teachers are important and teach people how to be functionning members of society and how to succeed in life. Your parents usually give you basic life advice from when they where a kid and how they grew up. But people on the internet usually have either a great level of success in a subject or they are annoying people who try and convince you that lettuce has rat poison in it, but usually they are great helps and can help you learn a subject with the help of a teacher. I look up to a diverse group of people, with people in the LGBTQ+ community and people who are black, white, hispanic, etc.

  14. The people I look up to and learn from are my teachers and my father. I don't have Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok because I never really wanted to get it but my friends online like in discord or messages are columbian, canadian, african so I guess some of thom are white. I think we can spread the word about OUR LIVES MATTER by whenever someone one say's something racial says Our Lives Matter.

  15. I don’t really look up to one person in particular but many people. I tend to look up to those who stand up for what is right even if the people around think the opposite. I don’t mind being looked at a different way if it means doing what’s right or what I think is right. I follow many different people on social media and they come from many different backgrounds. Some are of colour and some are white. The colour of someone’s skin doesn’t define them, it’s what they say and do that does. I will not follow someone if their videos or posts say rude things or show rude/violent gestures. We can spread the word of “OUR LIVES MATTER” by showing everyone that what you look like isn’t who you are. It’s your personality and actions that show the word who you really are.

  16. I don’t really have a role model, I guess I look up to my dad because he is super cool, but other than that I don’t really have an idol. I also don’t really go on social media so I don’t follow people or talk to people. I never realized till this year that whether they know it or not people like to hang out with people that look like them. I remember my mum telling me about how people like to date people that look like their parents because it is familiar and it feels safe to them. I think that a good way that we can show that we are inclusive and make sure that people know that every life is important, would be to listen to everyone, because if you listen to someone you will realize you could actually be really good friends with that person. I think if people actually stopped and listened people would realize that sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and that it could benefit them a lot.

  17. I don't have anyone that I necessarily look up to but I have a lot of people in my life that I know I can turn to for advice and knowledge and honestly I feel like I've learned more life skills from Tik-Tok than I do school. I like to follow people that do funny and relatable stuff. a lot of the people I follow come from different backgrounds but honestly I don't really keep track because to me like most of the time I don't notice or like it doesn't stand out to me if that makes sense. follow people because of the content they make and not and the colour of their skin religion Etc.

  18. I follow a lot of different people on social media. One in particular is Payton Moormeier. He is always trying to spread positivity on his page. I also follow a lot of creators of different backgrounds like @quenblackwell, @arrington171, etc. They are always promoting BLM and other important topics, which I think is important because they have tons of viewers who can be educated.
